Chapter 11

“Tara!” Suzie walked over to Tara, as she started to turn back toward the door. “Hold on a second.” Suzie stepped in front of her. “You and I need to talk.”

“Get out of my way!” Tara glared at each of the three women in turn and tried to step past them. “I don’t know what you three are up to, but you need to leave me out of it.”

“We know that you’re MsMarvelousMe.” Cathy leveled her eyes on Tara. “You’ve been leaving ugly and threatening comments about Trudy all over the internet.”

“You have no way to prove that it’s me.” Tara took a step back toward the door. “I don’t have to admit to anything.”

“It’s clear that you’re the person behind MsMarvelousMe.” Suzie crossed her arms as she studied the young woman. “There’s no point in denying it. It will only make you look more guilty.”

“Guilty? Guilty of what?” Tara glared at Suzie. “Haven’t you ever heard of free speech?”

“I think a lot of what you posted was closer to hate speech.” Suzie raised her eyebrows. “Or do you often accuse people of being psychopaths?”

“What kind of mother barely even talks to her son? And still tried to control his life?” Tara threw her hands up into the air as her voice grew shrill. “Do you really think that comment was that far from the truth? I’m sorry, I know she’s dead, but I’m not going to apologize for telling the truth.”

“While you hid behind a screen name.” Mary stepped closer to Tara. “You need to explain exactly what you did, Tara. Just think of how those comments are going to look to the police. They can use them to make a case to support the possibility that you are the one who killed Trudy.”

“What?” Tara took a sharp breath, her cheeks flushed. “That’s crazy!”

“Is it?” Suzie stepped to the other side of her, to block her chance to flee back into the building. “You were one of the last people to see her alive. She was in the diner where you work. She was poisoned, Tara. Do you really think it’s that much of a stretch to believe that someone who hated Trudy as much as you did, came up with a way to get rid of her once and for all?”

“Unbelievable!” Tara shouted. “I had nothing to do with any of this!”

“Let’s just talk about this.” Suzie looked at her. “If you had nothing to do with this then let’s try and find out what happened.”

“I can’t believe this is happening. I don’t have money for a lawyer. They’re going to lock me up, aren’t they?” Tara looked down at the floor.

“Take a breath, Tara,” Mary said softly. “We’re not here to frighten you. We just want to know what happened.”

“How am I supposed to know?” Tara winced, then looked up at them. “Wait, I have an alibi, I was at the diner the whole time. I was working. They can’t arrest me if I have an alibi, right?”

“As long as it’s solid.
